One of my pet peeves is receiving mass emails with ALL recipients’ names in the TO-line. When this happens, I usually send a polite response to the sender asking if, in future, they would put all recipients in the BCC-line. What surprises me is that some of these emails are from academic associations. I’m not sure why that surprises me, but it does.
I recently found this useful blog post explaining why and when we should (and shouldn’t) use BCC in emails.
Is anyone else concerned about seeing their names in a mass-mail TO-line without their consent? Or, to put it in more theoretical terms, are we still navigating the genre conventions of emails, even after 20-something years?
